Recycle textiles in your lives

Textiles and plastics come in many forms, some biodegradable, some not. You can take advantage of these materials to create useful new products for your home garden along with other uses. Textiles include all manner of clothing and can also be found on old furnishings such as curtains and sofas. Plastics can be found in a variety of forms, from soda bottles to product packaging. Although it can seem intimidating to find a purpose for this "trash," with a little creativity, you can repurpose these "waste" products into useful new objects.

1,Decide on a project. While you can simply accumulate textiles and plastics until you think of something to do with them, it is easier to have a plan so you know what you're looking for.

2,Look for usable materials. You should be able to easily wash or dry clean the materials. Antique cloths, however, tend to be extremely fragile, so they shouldn't be washed but they can be used for craft projects that won't be touched often. Small pieces of textiles or scraps can be used for a variety of purposes such as making quilts or small stuffed toys. Larger pieces can be used to make clothes, cover furniture and make wall hangings, among many other things.

3,Reuse plastic items by turning them into useful new objects. Focus on your major source of plastics, such as water bottles or packaging. Packaging can sometimes be used to create artistic objects like jewelry or in decoupage and collage projects. Water bottles, jugs and other types of containers, including cleaned plastic paint buckets, are extremely useful in gardens. They can be turned into hanging plant containers or watering containers. Product tubes, bottles and even the containers ChapStick comes in can be reused by refilling them with the products.

4,Take your textiles and plastics to be recycled at a commercial recycling center. Some of these products, such as jeans, can be turned into useful products like home insulation. Plastics can be melted down and turned into new products like cups, plates, utensils and, in some cases, broken back down into petroleum and even gasoline products.
